Volunteers...
Just looking around King Street Center at 3:00 in the afternoon, the impact of our volunteers is clear: tutors and kids fill every open desk; college students join Preschool and Afterschool staff in each classroom; mentors come to pick up their buddies, talking excitedly about their afternoon plans.
I'm awestruck by the level of commitment and consistency our volunteers have shown to kids at King Street. Volunteers know the children's names, but you can bet that the kids know their names, too. The connections between kids and volunteers--with all their diversity of skills and experiences--makes life at King Street Center so much richer.
This month, we honor our terrific volunteers. To hear about some of them in our kids' words, check out the end-of-the year tutoring video below!
With gratitude,
Vicky Smith Executive Director, the King Street Center

Celebrating tutors
King Street kids have been working one-on-one with tutors throughout the school year, practicing sight words, playing math games, and building friendships.
Cathy Seward with her tutees Nurto and Zach.
King Street staff, kids, and tutors celebrated the last official day of tutoring by watching a very special video together. Check out what kids have to say about their tutors:
| | Thank You Tutors |
We are proud of all of the hard work King Street kids have done with their tutors this school year--and the best part is, they've had lots of fun together, too.

Send a child to summer camp!
Registration forms are in the mail--our kids can't wait to get to Camp Abnaki and Camp Hochelaga this summer! We rely on the generous support of donors to send King Street kids to summer camp. To send a child to overnight camp for a week ($125), donate here. |
Thank you to all our volunteers We are so grateful to all of our dedicated volunteers, who bring their talent and energy to King Street each week--and are loved by the kids here!
We are proud to share that currently:
22 volunteers spend 2 hours a week in our Preschool, Afterschool, and Teens programs.
23 tutors come in once or more a week for 1 hour to work with a child on academics.
56 mentors spend 2-4 hours a week with a child out in the community.
We are wowed by these numbers (that's 101 volunteers!), but even more so by the quality of care our volunteers have given to kids at King Street Center.
The various roles played by volunteers--teaching drumming, coaching tennis, preparing dinner, and helping with homework, just to name a few--allow us to do so much more for kids at King Street. We thank you! |
Spring Break at King Street Center
It's been a cold and rainy school vacation week, but kids in the King Street Afterschool program are keeping busy at full-day camp. Yoga, computer games, cooking, and Lego building have been on the agenda. Happy (peaceful) spring break! |
